Menuetto was a a commission from intrepid violinist, Fenella Humphreys, who commissioned 5 new works from 5 UK composers to be performed alongside Sibelius’ Suite as part of the celebrations marking 150 years since the composers’ birth.
There’s something of the melancholy northern-European spirit in Sibelius’ music which always appeals to me: the musical world is often a delightful mixture which combines darkness with a sense of mischief and adventure. It is these two elements which I’ve drawn on for this rather melancholy minuet.
